How much does Pewdiepie make a year?
Famous and wealthy, Felix Arvid Kjellberg is a Swedish 25 year old YouTube game commentator who goes around by the alias Pewdiepie. His initial YouTube name was Pewdie but upon losing the password to his YouTube account, he recreated it and named himself as Pewdiepie and that therefore is the name his YouTube fans know him by.
Who is Pewdiepie?
Pewdiepie (Felix Kjellberg) is a young man, a growing internet sensation who has gained exceptional popularity due to his YouTube content. Though Pewdiepie was very famous among the gaming audience during his first year of YouTube blogging i.e. 2012, but he gained public attention when a Swedish newspaper, ‘Expresen’ brought him to lime light by publishing his annual income for the year 2013-14 which neared a whopping 7.4 Million dollars while his followers increased from 27 million to 37 million in that year alone. Current net worth of this YouTube celebrity with massive online followership is estimated to be around 61 Million dollars. Based on these amazing figures, in 2016 he made his place into the ‘Worlds 100 most influential people’s list’ issued by Times.
What does Pewdiepie do for a living?
Fan following is basically his main source of income. He shares his opinions and earns. Yes, hard as it is to believe, but that is technically what he does. Sounds easy – right? Well it isn’t that easy. Pewdiepie basically generates content for his YouTube channel after a lot of research and exploration. Most of it consists of his genuine and unfiltered views regarding various newly released games. His skills at commenting on the same along with his knowledge regarding internet gaming is what sets him apart from other online game commentators. He has been switching positions with some large scale channels like Multi Channel network and the Marker Studio.
He also wrote a book titled ‘This book loves you’ which has sold around 112000 copies during the past year. Adding further to his income are his marketing campaigns, mobile game downloads and various associated sponsorship's.
How did it all begin?
Born in Gothenburg, this Swedish citizen was originally set out to pursue a degree in Industrial Economics at the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. Gradually, he lost interest in his degree and dropped out of the University. He worked at a hotdog stand for a living while also creating some Photoshop art projects and selling the same.He created his YouTube account in 2010 for the first time. Later he starting commenting on various games and created v-logs for his YouTube account. That’s where he started gaining popularity and the YouTube account was his first step towards the world wide recognition he enjoys today. In 2012 his fan following crossed 1 million and by 2013 he had become the most subscribed user on YouTube.
Here is how it works. When we watch a v-log or a YouTube videos we often see those short advertisements before the video begins or sometimes between the videos. It’s mainly these ad revenues that pay the person who is sharing his content. Its simple math: the greater fan following, greater will be the ad revenue and greater number of audience will be viewing the content.
Let’s talk figures!
As of July, 2018 the net worth of Pewdiepie has been estimated to be around 61 Million dollars while his fan following has crossed 64 Million. In the last year alone, he reportedly made 15 million dollars just through YouTube. In light of the figures issued by VidIQ extension of Chrome, his daily earnings are averaged around 10K USD from YouTube’s platform alone. This does not include the promotional videos he makes.
Pewdiepie’s popularity has also encouraged him work for certain charities and fundraising initiatives. Noteworthy charities he has campaigned for or has been associated with include the water campaign, save the children, world wildlife fund and RED (a charity committed to fight HIV/ AIDS)
Criticism – Added factor in popularity
According to some reports, Pewdiepie made 12 million in the year 2017 eventhough some people had criticized him of giving racist comments in his v-logs. Such criticism has apparently only added to his popularity. People continue to follow his videos despite some anti-Semitic videos he posted.
Pewdiepie has an even better earning potential – Seriously?
According to some reviews, with a fan following as large as Pewdiepie has, his net worth and the yearly income he makes is not what he is capable of making. Though it appears a lot considering the nature of work he does, yet, large companies having similar fan following are capable of making even more money than this. Who knew a college dropout would turn out to be so famous and wealthy just by leaving reviews on YouTube. Yet, the story of this Swedish young man is in front of us. It’s not too late to start your own YouTube channel, who knows, what’s in store for you!
